Artist Statement

I aspire to capture the essence of magic. Ever since I was little, I’ve always liked to
imagine fantasy realms: ones with mythical creatures of various shapes and sizes. Most
importantly though, worlds with magic. Whether it simply be a system of mana, or a bond with
the elements, this idea has always been beautiful in my eyes.

The most captivating of these mythical creatures, for me, are fairies. Their grace and
beauty have a mystical aspect that enchants and captivates. That is the beauty that I wish to
unveil. They are my most powerful inspiration. With this, I create paintings and ceramics
displaying either the aspects of fairies or their magical elements.

My method for art is often sporadic, never organized. Any sense of organization that I’d
hoped for is thrown out the window once the art starts. I sometimes remain in one place for a
long time, defining and redefining, until the area I’m working on is to my liking. Other times, I
hop around like a madman, never staying focused in one place for too long.

In the end I end up with something enchanting. It could be an acrylic painting, using soft
and pastel colors, to make whimsical scenes with water and nature. On the other hand, it could be
a ceramic piece, molded into a shape representing either an element that fairies can control or a
piece of their form that gives off their aura.

Bio

Alyssa Williams is an artist of many mediums. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, she attended
Tidewater Community College from the age of 17, acquiring her associate’s degree in Studio
Arts 2 years later. As early as elementary school she knew she wanted to become an artist. Not
only drawing throughout her K-12 experience, but as a gift from her 1st grade teacher she
received a folder with her drawings from school and a paper where as a child she stated herself
her dream career was to be an artist.

Her work often is centered around fairies, using their association with magic and other
mythical creatures as her inspiration. Often these ideas show as flowers or butterflies, but other
times it can appear simply in her design of characters and creatures. In order to represent these
images from her mind, she uses painting and ceramics.

Now that she has graduated from TCC she plans to progress towards her bachelors
degree through ODU. Afterwards, she hopes to attain her masters. She is currently employed
by a Kpop Kingdom working on graphics for events.
