2023 Summer Semester
Surveys the history and interpretation of architecture, painting and sculpture from the prehistoric era through the Gothic.
Develops basic drawing skills and understanding of visual language through studio instruction/lecture. Introduces concepts such as line, proportion, space, perspective, value and composition as applied to still life, landscape and figure. Uses drawing media such as pencil, charcoal and ink wash. Includes field trips and gallery assignments as appropriate.
Introduces the elements and principles of design as applied to two-dimensional studio projects. Introduces two-dimensional media, techniques, compositional strategies, and color concepts and interactions. Supports conceptual development through introduction to historical and contemporary practices and critical analysis.
Introduces and prepares students to the critical processes and fundamentals of writing in academic and professional contexts. Teaches the use of print and digital technologies to promote inquiry. Requires the production of a variety of academic texts, totaling at least 4500 words (15 pages typed) of polished writing.
Assists student in transition to college. Provides overviews of college policies, procedures and curricular offerings. Encourages contacts with other students and staff. Assists students toward college success through information regarding effective study habits, career and academic planning and other college resources available to students.
2023 Fall Semester
Advances skills and exploration in drawing through studio practice. Continues investigation of elements and principles of design emphasizing perceptual figure drawing. Introduces a variety of media and techniques including color media and theory. Supports conceptual development through introduction to historical and contemporary practices and critical analysis.
Introduces sculptural concepts and methods of production in traditional and contemporary media. Includes clay, plaster, wood, stone, metal, plastics and terra cotta.
Further develops students’ ability to write for academic and professional contexts with increased emphasis on argumentation and research. Requires students to evaluate, integrate, and document print and digital sources to produce a range of academic and multimodal texts, culminating in a fully documented research paper.
Surveys the history of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas from approximately 1500 CE through the present.
Presents elementary concepts of algebra, linear graphing, financial literacy, descriptive statistics, and measurement & geometry. Based on college programs being supported by this course, colleges may opt to add additional topics such as logic or trigonometry.
2024 Spring Semester
Surveys the history and interpretation of architecture, painting and sculpture from the Renaissance through the modern era.
Provides a working introduction to computer-based electronic technology used by visual artists and designers. Presents the basics of operating platforms and standard industry software. Introduces problems in which students can explore creative potential of the new electronic media environment.
Introduces the student to the full range of printmaking techniques. Includes woodcut, silkscreen, etching, and lithography.
Studies development of the child from conception to adolescence. Investigates physical, intellectual, social and emotional factors involved in the child’s growth.
2024 Fall Semester
Introduces basic glass fusing, slumping, and painting techniques used to make vessels, fused, and painted glass items. Progresses with more difficult assignments that develop skill and concepts. Discusses historical and contemporary glass techniques, designs, and applications and incorporates into student stained glass work.
Examines the elements affecting human communication in individual (e.g., intrapersonal, interpersonal), small group, and public communication contexts with an emphasis on the practice of communication skills in each context. The assignments in the course require college-level reading and analysis of scholarly studies and coherent communication through written reports including the production of at least one APA/MLA-formatted individual writing assignment.
Surveys the use of social networks and online communities such as blogs, wikis and virtual events that allow companies to expand their interaction with customers and develop relationships with collaborative communities. Emphasizes the ongoing transformation of the way companies adjust their marketing plans to improve interaction with customers online.
Teaches the fundamentals of photography including camera function, composition, and image production as they apply to digital imagery.
2025 Spring Semester
Introduces abstract and representational painting in acrylic and/or oil with emphasis on color composition and value. Part I of II.
Focuses on portfolio preparation, resume writing, and job interviewing for students.
Presents the various steps considered necessary when going into business. Includes areas such as product-service analysis, market research evaluation, setting up books, ways to finance startup, operations of the business, development of business plans, buyouts versus starting from scratch, and franchising. Uses problems and cases to demonstrate implementation of these techniques.
Introduces art and design related to pottery. Teaches techniques of hand-building, throwing on the potter’s wheel, glaze techniques and experimental firing.
